Working From Home (or Remotely)

Looking for steps to configure your computer to allow you to either work from home or remotely away from your normal desk? Follow the steps below for guides on setup for the most common features requested:


Concordia Issued Computer

1. Turn On VPN

If you are looking to access your network drives (H drive, I drive, or J Drive), access Banner, or use Cisco IP communicator you must connect to VPN. All CU issued computers will have this installed. You must connect to VPN and wait at least 60 seconds prior to attempting to access your network drives or Banner. For steps on how to configure and turn on VPN, click here.

2. Cisco IP Communicator (Software Desk Phone)

If you would like to access your Cisco IP Phone you would normally use in your office from home our Network Operations team can configure that for you. This must be requested at least 48 hours in advance and requires your computer to be brought into our office. You can use any USB headset to interact with the program. 3. USB Headset

Any USB Headset can work with either Cisco IP Communicator or WebEx for video conferencing. If you did not receive one with your hardware during your new hire process, you can request one by emailing support@cu-portland.edu. These must be requested at least 48 hours in advance as we may not have these in stock for on demand pick up.

4. WebEx

You may have the need to conduct or join a WebEx meeting while working remotely. WebEx can be accessed from off campus without any special setup. Access to a CU Enterprise account must be requested a month prior to its need. However, there are some free options you can utilize in a pinch. To learn more, click here.

5. Connecting to Banner

The process for connecting to Banner is not different than that of connecting while on campus once you have VPN on.


Personal Computer

1. VPN

If you are looking to access your network drives (H drive, I drive, or J Drive) or to access Banner you must connect to VPN. 2. Map Network Drives

You can utilize your network drives after you have a VPN connection established. You can use the CU DriveMapper tool to configure the network drives to appear on your personal computer. For steps on how to use the CU DriveMapper, click here.

3. MS Office

All employees and faculty are entitled to a work from home licence of MS Office Pro. You may want to utilize this for using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or even Outlook. This can be downloaded over the internet by you at your convenience! For steps on how to redeem and download MS Office Pro, click here.

4. Accessing Email

After you have installed MS Office you may choose to utilize Outlook for accessing CU email. This will get you advanced features. If you are simply looking to check and reply to email, it is suggested you utilize the WebMail feature. For instructions on how to access/configure both, click the links below:

5. USB Headset

If you would like help configuring any of the above, please email with at least 48 hours notice requesting setup to support@cu-portland.edu. Only PC computers are supported for a "working remotely" setup. It may be possible on a Mac; however, any support by Tech Center staff is best effort and is not guaranteed to function fully.
